Ashton Kutcher surprised Ellen Degeneres when he donated $4 million on behalf of Ripple to Ellen DeGeneres’ wildlife charity on May 23. The $4 million was in the form of Ripple’s XRP token.
According to Coinmarketcap, ripple is considered the third most-valuable cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $24.4 million, behind bitcoin and Ethereum’s ether.
Kutcher donated live on the Ellen DeGeneres show. He mentioned that “you’re always thinking about everyone else. We wanted to show you that people are thinking about you.”
Kutcher also made a joke that large donations usually come with a “big, giant check.” The actor, however, showed DeGeneres and audience members of the talk show that with a push of a button, the millions of dollars could be transferred to the charity organization immediately. The original video has been viewed over two million times on YouTube and was a trending video.
During the show, Kutcher also spoke of his investments in the tech industry. He spoke of Ripple and its many use cases and mentioned his talk with the co-founders of Ripple Chris Larsen and Brad Garlinghouse, and how they decided to donate to DeGeneres’ wildlife charity located in Rwanda.
Ellen seemed shocked and excited about the donation, proclaiming that she “loves Ripple” and “thanks Ripple” for doing this.
Kutcher Makes a Large Donation on Behalf of Ripple
While Kutcher is well known as an American actor, he is also a co-founder of venture capital (VC) firm Sound Ventures. Kutcher had concocted the idea to donate to DeGeneres’ charity during an investment meeting with the Larsen and Garlinghouse.
“So we were meeting with these folks and were talking to us about the ethics of the company and this platform and how they actually really care about being an ethical company and giving a portion of this platform away to people that are doing good in the world,” said Kutcher.
“We [told Ripple], there’s this amazing human being, and all they ever do is think about other people they can give it to. Whether it’s in New Orleans, whether it’s in Montecito, whether it’s the people that come here, the people out there, you’re always thinking about everyone else, and we wanted to show you that people are thinking about you.”
Kutcher made and completed the $4 million transactions live using the XRP payments app. The tech investor has been quite eager and supportive of cryptocurrencies in the past. His VC firm has invested in Ripple. Kutcher has also funded BitPay, a cryptocurrency payment processor through a venture capital firm he co-founded called A-Grade investments.
Ripple has Donated Millions to Non-Profits
Just last month in March 2018, Ripple donated approximately $29 million in XRP to fund 35,000 classroom projects on DonorChoose.org, an online educational crowdfunding site. The act of kindness landed Ripple a segment on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“It’s the largest donation to DonorsChoose in history…Thank you, Ripple, absolutely wonderful,” said Colbert. The video was uploaded to Facebook and received over 10,000 reactions, over 700 comments, and 4,500 shares.
