According to Terence Eden’s Blog, a large, Microsoft Windows-powered advertising screen has turned into a bitcoin mining computer:
“It’s not uncommon to see broken-down Windows displays – I run https://windowsisbroken.tumblr.com/ – which is dedicated to pointing and laughing at such mistakes. But this is the first time I’ve seen a display repurposed for profit!”
NiceHash Miner Legacy, which is specially made for older computers, was installed on the advertising system.
The wallet address which the mined bitcoin is sent to starts with ‘3jgi6.’ Although the hash rate at the time of filing the report was zero, which means the mining malware had not started yielding bitcoin.
It is hard to find out if the attack was indeed carried out by external hackers or if a mischievous employee just decided to convert the company’s computer into a bitcoin miner for quick bucks; or if the advertising firm itself has gone crypto crazy and decided to integrate blockchain-based crypto mining into its business.
