As Bengaluru-based startup entrepreneurs Niti Shree and Prashant Sharma started planning out their wedding, they had a rather unusual idea in mind. The couple decided that they didn’t want bouquets, bedsheets, dinner sets, or other similar boring and mundane stuff in gifts. Instead, they decided to accept bitcoin as their wedding present.
Prashant and Niti informed their parents about the decision who, according to the couple, were “very receptive.”
Interestingly, the wedding took place on December 9, 2017, merely three days after India’s central bank issued its third warning urging people to refrain from investing in bitcoin. But that didn’t discourage the couple or their families from going ahead with their plan.
“Help us define a new standard for wedding gifting. We believe gifting hasn’t been disrupted and if you are thinking about conveying your best wishes through gifts, why not ride the new-age tech wave for this startup wedding?” the couple appealed in their wedding invite.
The invite illustrated the process of buying and using bitcoin to ensure that people unfamiliar with the seemingly complicated world of cryptocurrencies do not experience any problem buying gifts for the couple.
So where did the couple get this unique idea from?
Well, apparently it struck them last year as their friends started getting married one after another.
“In cities like Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Hyderabad, traditional wedding gifts do not work anymore. You need to be innovative. So we had to put our heads together to choose gifts for our friends,” Prashant said in an interview with the Times of India.
He added that they wanted to save their friends from such dilemma on their wedding day and therefore, came up with the appeal for bitcoin as their preferred wedding gift. Because most of the invitees were IT people, founders, and investors, the couple hoped that the idea would go down well with the guests.
The wedding card gave a glimpse of how the couple had met and subsequently decided to lead a new life together. Along with the cute backstory was a QR code linked to Zebpay, an Indian bitcoin exchange app that guests could download and use to send the couple’s preferred gift on their big day.
When asked about a possible crackdown by the government on virtual currencies, Niti told Quartz that it was a risk they were willing to take. After all, as entrepreneurs, the couple is used to taking risks that could potentially pay off big time in the future.
Prashant and Niti are co-founders at Offrd, a startup that describes itself as “a platform to hire pre-assessed non-tech talent through business challenges.” With all the media attention they were getting, Prashant and Niti did the sensible thing by urging people to invest in bitcoin with caution.
“…We are not saying that people should invest all their money into it, we are saying just bet on it a little if you are ready to take the risk.”
