I’ve long been paranoid about forgetting the birthdays of those I’m close to. These feelings have recently taken on a whole new meaning as the birthday of my girlfriend of three months is???

Kidding, I’m on it; it is the 17th of this month.

In the meantime, I just discovered another birthday here in January that’s noteworthy. In fact, it’s TODAY!

It’s the ninth Birthday of Bitcoin.

And damn, I forgot to get Satoshi a gift.

Yes, January 3, 2009, was when bitcoin was first mined and the first genesis block (the first block of bitcoins) happened. And, oh, what a journey it has been since: Bitcoin’s Historical Timeline.

Can you believe it? It’s been nine years since Satoshi Nakamoto launched his Bitcoin “Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.” And all based on a whitepaper which still exists online.

In the book Cryptoassets: The Innovative Investor’s Guide to Bitcoin and Beyond, authors Chris Burniske and Jack Tatar opine:

“In the opening moments of Bitcoin’s life as a public network, Satoshi made clear he was attuned to the failings of the global financial system. In the first instance of recording information on Bitcoin’s blockchain, Satoshi inscribed: ‘The times 03/Jan 2009 Chancellor on the brink of second bailout of banks,’ in reference to an article that appeared in the British publication The Times on the UK’s likely need to assist more banks in staying afloat… Satoshi’s choice first to employ this functionality by inscribing a note about the bailouts made it clear he was intent on never letting us forget the failings of the 2008 financial crisis.”

But wait, did I get the birthdate of bitcoin correct?

Yes, there are some who claim that the actual birthday of bitcoin is August 18, 2008, the date when Satoshi’s bitcoin.org site launched.

But I’m sticking with today, otherwise, I will have missed it.
