After consultations with more than 120 member states, industries, and civil societies, António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has inaugurated a 20-man panel of technology experts charged with exploring such new opportunities in the digital space as the blockchain technology.
Blockchain for World Unity
The United Nations, led by Antonio Guterres is looking to formulate ways to utilize the blockchain in solving world problems optimally.
The sophisticated panel on digital cooperation, to be co-chaired by Melinda Gates, U.S.-based philanthropist, and the renowned founder of Alibaba, Jack Ma, will plot digital developments and channel efforts at deepening global cooperation.
Guterres, represented by Ambassador Amandeep Gill, the executive director and co-chair of the panel, said the initiative was inspired by the need to have a solution-based approach to the potential impact of growing influence of digital technologies on economy, trade, data, security and social livelihood, instead of confronting them with competitive mechanisms which could be counter-productive.
Guterres stated:
“This is the first such panel of its kind and will be comprised of women and men at the frontiers of technology, public policy, science, and academia. The current means and levels of international cooperation are unequal to the challenge. I see the United Nations as a unique platform for dialogue in our digital age. That competitive spirit that mindset could pervade this domain and does impede the potential of digital technology to contribute to the achievement of the goals of the Agenda 2030 on sustainable development.”
“Unprecedented” in Pace and Scope
The UN chief further commended the critical role and pace at which digital techs like DLT has been transforming economies globally, describing it as highly “unprecedented.”
The panel members, in tandem to their mission, are expected to converge in New York by September during the U.N. General Assembly and in Switzerland in January 2019 respectively.
The UN’s attempt at exploring opportunities inherent in blockchain technology is not just starting now.
