The Big Bang Theory, one of the most popular prime-time American sitcoms, is all set to release a new episode featuring Bitcoin on November 30, 2017. In the 11 seasons that the show has aired on television for, its target audience has shifted from a niche selection of nerds and geeks to the mainstream public.
Little information is available on The Big Bang Theory’s latest episode prior to its release. From trailers and plot synopsis, we know that “The Bitcoin Entanglement” will highlight the cast of the show stumbling upon an old laptop with a fair chunk of bitcoin stored on its hard drive. Following that, conflict arises as the characters argue over who gets to be part of the split.
It is unlikely that the general public will get a technical explanation of the inner workings of Bitcoin and its underlying technology, the blockchain. Instead, the show will probably touch upon the general idea that virtual currencies currently offer, as well as introduce the public to using them as an investment method. Considering the potential reach of the show, it will also be instrumental in dispelling public apprehension revolving cryptocurrencies. Leaving behind a lasting, positive image of Bitcoin will probably be the icing on the cake for proponents of cryptocurrencies.
The sitcom joins several the ranks of several other popular TV series that have introduced Bitcoin in some way or another. Ratings for The Big Bang Theory this season are at an all-time high of 2.6 for the 18-49 age group, which corresponds to around 13 million average viewers per episode. With Bitcoin being a central plot point for this episode, The Big Bang Theory looks prepared to arouse the curiosity of many new potential investors and users.
Besides The Big Bang Theory in 2017, the USA Network’s Mr. Robot also put a rather heavy emphasis on digital currencies, including to some extent, bitcoin. Given that Mr. Robot’s central plot revolves around a dystopian timeline where the American economy is in a state of turmoil, the idea of an alternate, digital currency integrates into the show rather easily. The show’s fictional “E-coin” sounds functionally similar to real-world cryptocurrencies, and has been acknowledged alongside bitcoin several times this season.
Interestingly, other less-technically inclined TV series have also covered digital currencies in the past. The Good Wife and The Simpsons, both hugely popular shows, have included cryptocurrency discussion, though on a much smaller scale.
The trailer of The Big Bang Theory episode features a discussion of the currency’s price, in which the characters estimate it to be approximately $5000. However, at the time of writing, the price of bitcoin is almost double that figure, around $9900.
The price disparity is because the show’s creators decided not to project a future value for the currency. Instead, they most likely used whatever bitcoin’s price was at the time of production. Regardless of when the episode was written and produced, however, this dramatic rise in value will probably convince many people to take a long, hard look at the digital currency market.
