It is no news that bad actors use cryptocurrency to carry out illicit activities on the Dark Neb. However what is surprising is that Military personnel who are supposed to uphold law and order are now the ones breaking the law. US Navy investigators are currently probing claims of a Military drug ring at the U.S Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Bad Eggs

The US Navy officials have started looking into claims of a naval drug ring selling cocaine, ketamine, and LSD using the Dark Net tas a source for drugs.

According to reports, it was alleged that at least three midshipmen buy cocaine as well as powerful sedatives like ketamine and LSD on the Dark Net, using bitcoin and have been selling the hard drugs to their colleagues.

The investigation began three months ago when a midshipman reported the issue to authorities. So far, no formal charges have been leveled against the accused midshipmen. Midshipmen close to the investigation say about 20 cadets are being investigated for drug abuse, but it is believed that the number of students involved in the matter could be more.

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) while searching the rooms of suspects with drug-detecting dogs, found cocaine. A female midshipman in possession of the banned substance tried fleeing from the school, but she was promptly caught and arrested for further questioning.

Serious Offence

Use of banned substances is a serious crime in the modern world, however, it is even more so when authorities are caught in the act.

To demonstrate the severity of the allegation, the second in command in the Naval Academy, Captain Robert B. Chadwick II, ordered an emergency drug test for all midshipmen at about 5:30 am on February 21. The total number of midshipmen at the school is 4,500. Under normal circumstances, senior midshipmen leaders are notified of a drug test at least a night before the exercise takes place and the tests are given only to personnel at the company level, which is about 150 midshipmen at a time. But in this case, all 4,500 military personnel were tested in one go.

Naval Academy public affairs officer, Commodore David McKinney, said in an emailed statement that:

“We are continuing to work with [the Naval Criminal Investigative Service]on these reported allegations. The Navy has a zero tolerance for drug abuse and takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously.”

While there are many benefits of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, there have been quite a number of cases of drug lords using these blockchain-based virtual currencies to facilitate their illicit deals on the Dark Net.

The allegations against the US Navy Academy personnel are not the first time figures of authority have been caught on the wrong side of the law. For instance, Shaun Bridges, who was part of the Silk Road task force, was jailed for more than 70 months after it was found that he laundered money, stole bitcoins and obstructed the course of justice. DEA agent Carl Force was also jailed for the theft of bitcoin from the infamous Dark Net marketplace.
